Why DxE Wednesday: Cat Roberts

This is the first in a series of interviews with DxE activists conducted by Rachel Waite, who is part of the blog team and an organizer for DxE Grand Rapids (MI)

Q: What inspired you to first get involved with activism and join DxE?

I got inspired by just watching many activists over the years; passion, confidence and spirit were what inspired me to get involved with activism almost nine years ago. Joining DxE, three years ago, was the most awe-inspiring moment for me because I love fighting for the animals' lives.

Q: What is your favorite or most accomplished moment in activism or other DxE activity?

I would say that my favorite moment in DxE was the die-in. The die-in incorporated how many animals lost their lives unnecessarily and also opened other people's eyes, letting them know that the animals were not ours to exploit in this world. This has been a powerful accomplishment of DxE.

Q: How did you get involved in the NFL disruption and what was it like?

I got involved in the NFL disruption through fellow-activist, Matt Johnson. When we rehearsed it, it was executed very well. It was a little risky, but absolutely riveting for a disruption. It was a powerful move, like when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, only a different scene. Animal liberation was worth the risk.

Q: What keeps you motivated in your activism?

Inspiration, spirit and creativity are what keep me motivated in my activism. I see most of my friends creating new things and I'm proud to see that it is slowly but surely becoming noticeable with DxE. I'm in the middle of creating more ideas for my novel, which I started in April 2010. It involves two sisters wanting to make more of themselves as not just vegan activists but all-around animal rights activists as well. I hope to continue to really bring inspiration to the novel.

Q: What advice would you give to new activists?

The advice I would give new activists is to be yourself, bring your creativity and never stop fighting for animals. We don't want to bring cruelty to our plates.

Q: Why Animal Liberation?

Because exploitation to animals is never justified. I will never apologize for fighting for a just cause. We'll keep fighting until every animal is happy, safe and free.
