Why DxE Wednesday X: Arwen Carlin
This is the latest installment in a series of interviews with DxE activists by Rachel Waite, who is part of the blog team and an organizer for DxE Grand Rapids (MI)
Q: What inspired you to first get involved with activism and join DxE?
I was inspired when I saw videos of some of my greatly-admired online vegan friends participating in DxE actions. Shortly after that, I went to a circus protest. Although it was great standing up for animals who are forced to perform tricks for our entertainment, I also wanted to stand up for the animals whose bodies are used for food. With the help of some very brave and passionate people, we started DxE Raleigh, and our first action was a huge success!
Q: What is your favorite or most-accomplished moment in activism or other DxE activity?
It's so hard to choose! I can think of so many great moments. One of my favorites was when we disrupted the NC State Fair. It was our biggest action yet. We did our speakouts in a building where live animals were waiting to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, while just outside, their relatives' dismembered corpses were sold for profit. It is so powerful to speak against injustice as it is happening right in front of you.
Q: As an organizer, what have been your greatest challenges and biggest rewards?
My greatest challenge has been to get people involved in our actions. Even though our actions are powerful with only a small group of dedicated people, I can't help but think about how much more powerful we would be if all ethical vegans in this area joined us.
My greatest rewards have been making friends with the truly brave and inspiring activists in my group and also being connected to activists like them all over the world. I have no doubt that together we will achieve animal liberation.
Q: What keeps you motivated in your activism?
When I think of the animals suffering, I can't wait until our next action. Volunteering at local sanctuaries also reminds me of what we are fighting for. The rescued animals are so sweet and trusting. There are so many others just like them, but they are not so lucky. They are suffering horribly, and they desperately need our help.
Q: What advice would you give to new activists?
Do all you can do for the animals. Be brave for them. They need our help.
Q: Why Animal Liberation?
If you stand on the side of justice, there is no other choice. Animals are not our possessions. They deserve to be free.
